The eISR is a unique sporting and engineering event that highlights the challenges of putting people in the ocean. The images and videos you see here on this website all tell the story of young people translating theory into practice, solving challenges not dissimilar from those facing humanity as the world rapidly changes around us.
Over the course of a demanding year-long programme, culminating in an intense one-week race, you can witness their transformation. These students become capable, adaptable problem solvers, designing, redesigning, building, and rebuilding high-performance submarines under the twin pressures of time and peer expectation. They work within tight budgets, navigate strict regulations, and strive to meet ambitious sustainability goals.
The eISR is more than just a race. It’s a proving ground for this next generation of engineers, scientists, and innovators — young people who will soon be tackling the most urgent challenges of our time. We are investing in a hands-on educational experience that equips students not just with technical skills, but with the resilience, creativity, and collaboration needed to drive real-world impact. Together with our partners and sponsors, we are helping to launch the careers of those who will shape a better future beneath the waves and beyond.
Through college, there’s a clear understanding that the students in human powered submarine racing clubs get jobs. Employers who know about these races and the caliber of engineers that come out of them want to hire them. Now, having worked in the industry, I understand why.Declan DePietro, Ocean Engineer and Alumnus of FAU Submarine Team
The eISR is one of the most monumental and formative events that I have taken part in. The combination of fast pace engineering solutions and friendly competition make eISR a unique and challenging event. I learned what it takes to design, build and race a human powered submarine. Without the eISR, I would not be the engineer I am today.Graydon Rourke, Former UVic Submarine Racing Club President
Preparing for and competing in the eISR gave me valuable real-world experience in both direct engineering skills as well as in communication, project management and budgeting. The connections I made through my submarine team as well as at the eISR led me to the marine engineering career I have today.Robert Karren, Mechnical Engineer at PacMar Technologies, Alumnus of UWHPS
How you can help
The eISR exists thanks to the vision and support of its sponsors. Their commitment — financial, technical, and personal — has made it possible for us to deliver this extraordinary event year after year. Now, we would like to invite you to join us and help inspire and empower the next generation of engineers!
For a few thousand pounds — or equivalent in-kind support — you can meet your corporate social responsibility goals while engaging directly with the kind of motivated, skilled, and job-ready young people who will soon be shaping the future of your industry. These are students who have already proven themselves under pressure and who bring fresh thinking to the real-world challenges your teams and customers face.
An eISR sponsorship is not just a logo on a t-shirt or a link on a website. Our sponsors are involved in day-to-day racing activities, are part of the judging team and organise evening events throughout the race week. It’s a dynamic, visible, and valuable partnership.
